Day Two - Reading Groups
This summer I am looking to make things a little different with reading groups of four students working together. Originally, students were to pick their own groups. This doesn’t work with a truancy program as many student arrive at different times or are added at the last minute. So, I had to randomly assign students to groups as room was available.
Some students are signifcantly behind in reading skills - as much as four grade levels in some cases. This means that some students struggle with reading, and if their peers are not helping or reading aloud, these students feel lost. I step at that point and read with them, but this was not the original plan. I hope that in the coming days as students will develop more cohesive group dynamics that allows for them to help each other.
Tomorrow I will have students work with a practice read aloud. I hope this might model the way group or partner reading can help students.
The project for this week is to write three survey questions that will be used to create a graph. From the graph of data collected students will complete a write up of conclusions that can be made from their surveys. While it might not seem like it, asking usable questions for a survey is hard for young people. We will see…
